The New Jersey Devils have solidified their defensive corps by re-signing defenseman Santeri Hatakka to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $125,000 ($150,000 guaranteed) in the AHL. Acquired during the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline in the Timo Meier deal with the San Jose Sharks, Hatakka has exceeded expectations with his potential as a future regular NHL defenseman.
During the previous season, Hatakka split his time between the NHL and AHL, prominently featuring with the Utica Comets where he showcased his skills as a top defenseman, tallying five goals and 20 points across 45 AHL appearances. In his brief stint with the Devils, he contributed with two assists in 12 games, impressing coaches and management alike with his defensive prowess and ability to limit opponent scoring opportunities through adept stick work and strategic positioning.
Originally drafted by the Sharks in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft from Finland’s Junior league with Jokerit, Hatakka has steadily progressed, notably aiding Finland in securing a bronze medal at the 2020-22 U20 World Junior Championships.
Heading into the upcoming season, Hatakka is expected to begin with the Utica Comets in the AHL, providing solid defensive stability. However, his performance suggests he could be a primary candidate for a call-up to the Devils’ blue line should the need arise during the season.
