Dean Jones has suggested John Lundstram could be on his way out of Rangers after he refused to comment on his contract situation when asked by Sky Sports.
Lundstram remained coy on the situation, confirming that his deal would expire at the end of the season, but claiming any negotiations over a new one would stay between him and the club.
This led the former Eurosport journalist to suggest that there may be doubts over his future, despite the assumption previously being that he would remain at Ibrox beyond his current deal.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT [16 December], Jones shared: “It felt like a bit of a strange moment and one that probably caught me a little bit off guard because when we’ve seen him speaking previously about it, there didn’t seem to be much doubt that he’d want to stay or he would be staying really if that was the case of him hoping to do that.
“He seemed almost slightly rattled by the question. Maybe he is fed up with hearing about it; it could be as simple as that. But it also just makes you wonder if the situation has changed.
“As I say, the assumption has always been that he would stay, but it has got people considering whether he might leave after all.”
Unlikely to be a hint
As usual, the comments from Lundstram are very unlikely to be a hint over his future. Whenever people read too deeply into these things like little quotes or reactions, they are usually wrong. This is more likely to be frustration at being asked the same question.
However, given that Lundstram is likely to be asked the question in every interview until he either signs a new deal or the current one expires, it does appear strange that he would react in the abrasive way he did rather than just giving your usual media-trained response.
As he says, though, those talks are between him and the club. Whether he stays or not will come down to a number of factors and decisions along a chain of command at Rangers, and whether that happens immediately or soon remains to be seen.
His performances this season have certainly warranted an extended deal, but talks of cutting players adrift at the end of the season to balance the wage bill may lead to more speculation growing over the future of the midfielder.
