Newcastle United’s hopes of landing David De Gea appear to be dwindling due to the goalkeeper’s astronomical wage demands.
The Magpies are not short of a penny or two given their PIF ownership. The Saudi owners have backed Eddie Howe in each of the transfer windows he’s overseen and a goalkeeping crisis could see Newcastle have to move again in January.
One name being linked with Newcastle is former Manchester United stopper De Gea. The Spaniard is without a club since leaving Old Trafford in the summer and is apparently being considered by the Mags.
However, according to Estadio Deportivo, De Gea is demanding huge money to sign for a new club.
It’s reported De Gea is asking for some £17m-a-year (£350k-a-week) to even consider signing for someone like Newcastle and other interested parties.

It’s quite obvious that players see Newcastle now and know that money is there for them in terms of the contracts being offered.
While the Mags have been quite careful not to overdo it in terms of FFP, they have also spent a decent sum and invested heavily into some long-term contracts.
Quite whether they’ll see value in spending such a huge sum on bringing in De Gea on a short-term contract is another argument though.
It seems odd that De Gea, who is not playing at all, can demand such numbers when he’s not had much interest since leaving United in the summer.
Yes, we know De Gea is a ‘world-class’ stopper but he’s going to be rusty and £350k-a-week for someone not even playing is a bit of a massive outlay.
Newcastle, then, should consider other options if this is the cost.
