Akin Famewo has shared his appreciation for Chris Powell ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s meeting with Stoke City.
Speaking in today’s pre-match press conference, the Owls defender admitted that he was ‘very happy’ when he found out that he was set to join the club as an assistant coach.
Primarily a centre-back, Akin Famewo has played every game under Danny Rohl on the left-side of defence.
While there were calls for him to be slotted back into his natural position, the 25-year-old has impressed in recent games and has said that having Chris Powell around has helped.
The former left-back made over 600 league appearances for the likes of Charlton Athletic and Derby County, before going into coaching with a host of big clubs, as well as the England national team.
Powell joined Sheffield Wednesday as Rohl’s assistant in October and Famewo admits he has been ‘picking his brains’.
On playing out of position, Famewo said: “It’s been a massive thing for me, because I think it’s good to play different positions and give a good account of yourself. And honestly, I’ve been really enjoying it at left back – it’s been a different challenge for me, and there are some big hitters in this league, so I’ve been going up against some great wingers. I’ve been really enjoying it, and I hope that I’ve shown on the pitch that I’m hard-working and that I can play and fight for my own. I feel like I have been.
Speaking on Powell’s arrival, he added: “It’s nice having Chris here, he’s done it all before at the top, so it’s been great.
“He’s been a great addition, I was very happy to find out that he was coming, and I’ve been picking his brains and trying to learn from him.”

Akin Famewo may have taken his time getting used to his new position, but he seems to have adapted well in recent weeks – just like the rest of the squad.
Everyone has had new challenges to face following Danny Rohl‘s arrival, with the German expecting a lot more from his players. But the international break seems to have been the perfect opportunity for things to improve, and they have looked a much better side over the past few games.
Having a coach like Chris Powell will undoubtedly help too. The former defender has worked with the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Kyle Walker during his time with England and has plenty of experience to help guide this set of players.
