Hayden, 28, remains at Newcastle United following his return from Standard Liege, and despite quite widespread Championship interest in his services.
Sheffield Wednesday are just one of the teams linked, though it looked like a temporary move to Preston was in the offing after it was revealed that the Lilywhites had held talks with Hayden.
Since, it’s been reported that Preston view Hayden as a back up option and so there’s a chance that the Owls could still land the hardened midfielder, who reportedly earns £51,000-a-week at St James’ Park.

Danny Rohl needs a no.6 at Sheffield Wednesday
It was revealed earlier in the month that Danny Rohl is keen on landing a new striker and a mobile no.6 in this month’s transfer window.
It comes after Will Vaulks‘ drop in from and removal from the XI which has prompted a change in shape for the Owls, who now play without a player in front of the defence.
It gives Sheffield Wednesday less defensive coverage, as seen in the 4-0 demolition at Southampton earlier in the month, but Hayden could be the perfect solution to this problem.
He’s a very physical midfielder, with former Owls boss Steve Bruce previously hailing his defensive traits.
Isaac Hayden arrival could prompt Jeff Hendrick return
Sheffield Wednesday already have Jeff Hendrick on loan from Newcastle United, but the arrival of Hayden could well give Rohl reason to send Hendrick back to St James’ Park.
There’s been murmurs of Hendrick’s loan being terminated this month but after the earlier exits of John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson, it seems like Hendrick is being kept around, purely as back up in the middle of the park.
If Hayden arrives and Hendrick is sent back, it would open up a loan slot for Rohl to bring in a player in another position of the pitch.
Hayden arrival could kickstart influx of signings
Hayden is a player with pedigree. He has 118 Premier League appearances to his name and was well-liked by Newcastle fans during his prime years at the club.
And if a player with his career opts to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan then it could signal to other players who are maybe considering where to go next, to come to Hillsborough.
The Owls have missed out on a few targets this month. Rohl still has just the two signings to his name but if he can get a deal over the line for Hayden, it could be great advertising for the Owls as they vie for more deals in the final week of the window.
