Last year, Pickens accumulated 1,140 receiving yards, sharing the field with Diontae Johnson, who has since been traded to the Carolina Panthers. With Johnson’s departure, Pickens has become the Steelers’ primary receiving target, a position that could significantly boost his opportunities. According to Patra, Pickens is expected to receive a high volume of targets, thanks to a lack of established competition behind him on the depth chart. At 23 years old, Pickens has demonstrated exceptional talent and is particularly effective in one-on-one matchups.
Historically, Pickens has been utilized primarily as a deep threat, stretching the field. However, Patra anticipates that new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will leverage Pickens more diversely across the field, in contrast to the strategies of the previous coaching staff. This strategic shift could place Pickens in a prime position to lead the NFL in targets this season, provided no significant additions are made to the wide receiver group.
In addition to his impressive yardage, Pickens led the league in yards per reception last season with an average of 18.1 yards. Despite the Steelers’ offense ranking among the lower tiers in passing attempts and yards, Pickens managed to secure 1,140 yards on just 63 receptions. With the team introducing two new quarterbacks and a new offensive coordinator, and with less competition for targets, Pickens is well-positioned to elevate his game and potentially emerge as a top-tier receiver in the NFL.
