Michigan Football’s Flea Flicker Mastery: Unmatched Artistry on the Gridiron

Unleashing the Wolverine Magic, Exploring Michigan Football's Dominance with the Flea Flicker since 2021!

The past three years of Michigan football can be summarized by Sherrone Moore’s popular phrase, “SMASH.” During this period, Michigan has established themselves as the most physically dominant team in the country, excelling in the running game since 2021.

In addition to their physicality, the team has also displayed a strategic approach by incorporating trick plays into their offensive game plan. One trick play that has been particularly favored is the flea flicker. This play has been utilized more frequently than any other trick play. Nick Saban acknowledged the challenge it poses for opposing teams, stating, “It requires players to maintain discipline and focus on the right elements so that they can effectively defend against such plays.” Despite opponents becoming aware of Michigan’s tendency to employ the flea flicker, the Wolverines have consistently executed it at opportune moments. Let’s revisit some of the notable flea flicker plays from 2021 onwards.

In the 2021 game against Wisconsin, following their successful conversion on a crucial fourth down in the first quarter, the Wolverines employed a flea flicker to score their first points at Camp Randall.

During the 2021 game against Ohio State, a significant moment in the third quarter called for a play that would allow Michigan to extend their lead over the Buckeyes. They executed a well-timed play where Mikey moved into a wheel route, resulting in a perfectly executed maneuver.

In the 2022 matchup against TCU, Michigan took advantage of a turnover by the opposing team. Ronnie Bell played a pivotal role in this play, momentarily faking a stalk block before swiftly surpassing the defensive backs. J.J. delivered a precise pass, allowing the Wolverines to score a touchdown.

The incorporation of the flea flicker has played a crucial role in Michigan’s offensive achievements throughout the past three years. Rather than relying on a high volume of trick plays, the team has prioritized the selection of high-quality opportunities. They have consistently utilized these plays at precisely the right moments, catching opposing defenses off guard when they least expect it. It is exciting to anticipate the innovative variations of the flea flicker that the offensive staff will devise for the upcoming 2024 season.
