David Bell made Reds history on Sunday afternoon, though it wasn’t the type of milestone he’d want to celebrate. During Cincinnati’s game against Boston at Great American Ball Park, Bell was ejected in the top of the fourth inning. His frustration stemmed from calls made by home plate umpire Todd Tichenor on pitcher Nick Lodolo, who had just allowed a two-run home run to Connor Wong and a double to Romy González before walking Dominic Smith.
Bell had already been ejected from the game when he emerged from the dugout to express his displeasure with Tichenor, marking his 30th ejection with the Reds. This ties him with Sparky Anderson for the most ejections by a manager in franchise history.
Despite Bell’s ejection, the Reds continued to face challenges in the inning. A throwing error by Jonathan India allowed the Red Sox to extend their lead to 3-0, and Jarren Duran furthered Boston’s advantage to 4-0 with an RBI double before Lodolo managed to end the inning.
It’s possible that Bell and his team were still grappling with lingering frustration from Saturday. In that game, the Reds initially held a 3-0 lead during the middle contest but faltered, allowing the Red Sox to mount a comeback and ultimately secure a 4-3 victory.
