Newcastle United are keen on recruiting the services of Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen this summer, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The Magpies wanted to sign the 28-year-old during the January transfer window, but he was not interested in the move and former Barca manager Xavi did not want to let him go either as he was too important to his side.
Newcastle have reignited interest in the former Chelsea star and manager Eddie Howe believes landing the Denmark international can help significantly improve the Magpies’ defence.
Hansi Flick has been appointed as Barca’s new manager and Christensen has admitted he is looking forward to playing under the German.
However, the La Liga club could be open to cashing in on him given their financial struggles, and selling him will be beneficial to them in their bid to balance the books given that they signed him for free in the summer of 2022.
Newcastle could be open to splashing the cash if need be this summer after missing out entirely on European qualifications, and landing the Dane could come in very handy.
Apart from the Premier League experience and the quality he brings to the table, Christensen’s versatility also makes him a player worth signing.
The defender can play as a defensive midfielder, featuring in the position plenty of times during the 2023-24 campaign due to his ball-playing qualities, and it appears it is one of the things which have attracted Newcastle to him.
Christensen played 42 games across all competitions last season, starting 37 times, and convincing him to leave the Catalans for a team not playing in Europe and unlikely to challenge for the title could be very difficult.
The Magpies will hope they can lure him away from Nou Camp, and successfully doing so will be huge given the calibre of player he is.
