The representative prop worsened a knee injury during the round-two victory of 28-18 against South Sydney.
Broncos coach Kevin Walters had already confirmed that Haas would not be available for the NRL grand-final rematch against Penrith on Thursday night. However, now it seems that the club may have to wait until round nine to have him back on the field.
According to Broncos performance chief Dave Ballard, Haas met with a specialist who determined that an arthroscopy next week would be the best course of action. Ballard emphasized that the club prioritizes the long-term health of the player, even if it means Haas will miss some games. The recovery period for this type of surgery is typically up to six weeks, but the Broncos are confident that Haas, known for his dedication to rehab, will make a strong comeback.
In addition to Haas, Broncos captain Adam Reynolds, who is dealing with a medial collateral ligament injury, will also be sidelined for the Penrith clash. Despite the setbacks, Walters had initially included Haas in the lineup, hoping he would complete Wednesday’s captain’s run without any issues.
However, Haas remained in the rehab group as his knee continued to cause problems. Coach Kevin Walters had previously stated that the club would prioritize caution when dealing with Haas’s injury flare-up.
As a result of Haas’s absence, Roosters recruit Fletcher Baker will make his starting debut for the Broncos, and rookie prop Xavier Willison will join the 17-man squad.
“Payne won’t be playing,” confirmed Walters.
“We will start Fletcher Baker. Xavier Willison comes into the 17, and he is a promising prospect.”
While Haas may feel he is letting the team down, Walters reassured him that it is not the case.
“He didn’t feel 100 percent today. He is a key player for us, so we will play him when he is fit.”
Walters expressed confidence in Baker, describing him as “very solid” and deserving of his starting opportunity. The coach also had faith in Jock Madden, who is replacing Adam Reynolds, and believed he would step up against Penrith’s Nathan Cleary.
“It’s an awesome chance for Jock. He played the trials, and we love what he brings to our team,” Walters said.
“He had the choice of us or Penrith (before he signed with Brisbane), and I am pleased he did choose us.”
“He gets an opportunity tomorrow night to reward the Broncos and his teammates with a really strong performance.”
Walters acknowledged Madden’s growth, especially with Reynolds’ leadership and guidance, and expressed confidence in his skills and continued improvement, expecting a strong performance from him against the Panthers.
