Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
The January transfer window is in full swing, but the Magpies are yet to make any permanent or loan signings. That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from seeing a host of players linked with a potential move to St James’ Park.
Ederson is one of the latest names to be credited as a potential target for Eddie Howe’s team. According to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Newcastle sent scouts to watch Ederson in action during Atalanta’s 5-0 win over Frosinone in Serie A on Monday night.
The game saw Ederson score one of the five goals at the Gewiss Stadium. It was Ederson’s sixth goal of the season in all competitions, with five in Serie A and one coming in the Europa League.
So what do we know about the latest player linked with a move to Newcastle?
The 24-year-old midfielder began his professional career in Brazil with Desportivo Brasil, before going on to move to Cruzeiro in 2019. He would go on to remain in his homeland with spells as Corinthians and Fortaleza, before moving to Europe in 2022.
Italian club Salernitana signed Ederson in January that year for a reported fee of €6.5 million (£5.5 million). He would go on to make 15 appearances for the club in Serie A before he was on the move again.
In July 2022, just six months after signing for Salernitana, Ederson was completing a switch to Atalanta. Now just 18 months on, the versatile midfielder is being linked with yet another move.
Ederson is capable of operating in several positions in midfield, having been deployed as both a No.6 and No.10 this season alone. The 24-year-old has been a regular member of the starting line-up this term for Atalanta, starting 19 out of his 20 games so far and completing the full 90 minutes on 16 occasions.
His performances in Italy over the past two years have seen him gain plenty of attention across Europe. Goal has reported that Manchester United also have an interest in Ederson. Tutto Atalanta has also stated that the Serie A club would not entertain any bids lower than €40 million (£34 million).
