West Brom could sign Dexter Lembikisa on loan in January transfer window after Wolves terminate Rotherham United loan.

West Brom could now be set for a second chance at signing summer target Dexter Lembikisa after he was recalled from his loan at Rotherham United.

The Rotherham Advertiser reported on 10 January that the Championship side had “lost a player today” as the Jamaica international returned to Wolves after making 25 league appearances over the first half of the season.

The Baggies’ rivals now “intend to place the 20-year-old Jamaica international with another second-tier side for the rest of the season”, raising the prospect that he could arrive at The Hawthorns a few months after the club missed out on him in the summer window.

Rotherham had beaten West Brom, as well as other Championship sides Coventry, Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday and QPR to the right-sided wing-back ahead of the season.

A reason for Wolves terminating Lembikisa’s loan at Rotherham hasn’t been provided, but the fact that the club is rooted to the bottom of the Championship would suggest they want him to be playing higher up the division.

That would seem to therefore rule out both QPR and Wednesday as they occupy the other two spots in the bottom three, while Stoke are also struggling in 19th.

The fact that West Brom and Wolves are fierce rivals adds a potential complicating factor to the situation, but the Baggies would surely have not been in pursuit of the youngster in the summer if they didn’t feel there was any prospect of success.

And Coventry have historically had a certain amount of rivalry with the Molineux side themselves, so unless a new taker has emerged between transfer windows it seems to give the Baggies a chance.

Lembikisa would be cup tied for the potential derby in the 4th round of the FA Cup if Wolves beat Brentford, having featured for Rotherham in the competition already.

Carlos Corberan needs attacking reinforcements above all this month after losing Jeremy Sarmiento in similar fashion when Brighton recalled him and sent him to Ipswich, and long-term injuries to Josh Maja and Matt Phillips.

The latter’s surgery has ruled him out for potentially the remainder of the season and would seem to have left a spot that Lembikisa could fill ahead of Darnell Furlong.

Though nominally a full-back the seven-cap international is attacking and might still be on the West Brom shortlist as a low-cost addition, since he is now suddenly available once more.
