Newcastle United’s Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak, as well as another injury scare.
After Joelinton had given Newcastle lift off in the first half against AC Milan, the Serie A giants rallied to score twice and dump Eddie Howe’s side out of the Champions League.
Fans experienced every emotion on Wednesday night, with qualification on the cards initially. Paris Saint-Germain weren’t doing what was required, while Newcastle were dominant against AC Milan.
But the adulation soon turned to despair and desperation, as an AC comeback called time on the Magpies’ European adventure.
Not only are Newcastle United out of the Champions League and Europe completely this season, they may also have picked up another injury amid their ongoing crisis.
Kieran Trippier limped off during AC Milan defeat
Eddie Howe made a double situation in the 63rd minute, with Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon coming off for Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.
It was a major shock to see Trippier trudge off, as he is one of our best players. It was only the day before that Howe stated that Newcastle are a much better team when the 33-year-old is doing well.
However, it then transpired that it was enforced rather than tactical, with Trippier limping off as Burn came on for his first appearance in more than a month.
Now Jermaine Jenas has commented on Trippier’s potential injury, and shared something he saw after the full time whistle that is slightly concerning.
Speaking on TNT Sports about 20 minutes after Newcastle’s 2-1 loss to AC Milan, Jenas admitted that the defender did not look in a good way when he walked past.
“Kieran Trippier has just walked very slowly by us having been taken off and he is another one who they are going to have to look at moving forward,” he said.
Newcastle defender will miss Saturday’s game regardless
There is no word on Trippier’s status as of yet, but there will be concern from supporters.
However, the one saving grace is that he can’t play on Saturday anyway. After getting booked against Tottenham Hotspur, Trippier will now be suspended for the game against Fulham.
That will either give Burn or Lewis Hall the chance to start, while it also gives Trippier a well-deserved rest. He certainly needs it, even more so after being forced off during the Champions League defeat to AC Milan.
Hopefully it is something the £12million man can shake off quickly, as the games continue to come thick and fast for Newcastle. After Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday, it is a Carabao Cup quarter final against Chelsea on Tuesday.
