Paul Robinson heaps praise on Carlos Corberan after ‘strange’ West Brom decisions
Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Carlos Corberan’s work this season, after admitting he found some decisions made at West Brom “strange” this year.
Despite having a side which is down to its bare bones after a quiet summer transfer window, Albion currently sit seventh in the Championship table and level on points with Sunderland who occupy the final top six place.
Much of the credit for that excellent start has been afforded to Corberan for his excellent work at The Hawthorns, but former left-back Robinson has admitted that he found it odd Albion allowed the likes of Taylor Gardner-Hickman and other squad players to leave this summer.
As quoted by the Express & Star (21 November) he said: “I think at this moment in time he’s done a great job, especially with the limited funds he’s had to work with.
“The squad is down to the bare bones, he’s had to let players go – good players in my eyes, like Taylor Gardner-Hickman, good footballers who you’d keep as squad players, I found that strange.
But seventh in the league…in a tough, tough league this year, the teams that came down, those that come up, it’s one of the toughest in a long time. I think Carlos is doing a good job.
This year West Brom are in a great position but you might be concerned with that depth just to take them that little bit further where they need to be. But I’d love to see it, Baggies always belong in the top division because of the job they’ve done there before.”
Great position
It has almost been forgotten just how miserable the mood was around The Hawthorns before a ball was even kicked this season, with most West Brom supporters resigning themselves to a season of disappointment after an unremarkable transfer window.
Another year with a lack of investment left Corberan with an incredibly limited side, while the departure of players like Gardner-Hickman, Karlan Grant and Dara O’Shea meant that any semblance of depth had been lost in Albion’s ranks.
So far this season however, Corberan has found a way to keep winning, even with several players currently unavailable through injury in his side and just as Robinson has here, he deserves immense credit for this recent run of form.
The Championship is never an easy league to get out of, but this season is incredibly tough, with several very well-equipped teams financially so it will take a lot for Albion to return to the Premier League, but if they continue to play how they have started this season, West Brom can certainly push for the play-off places.
