Gary Neville has played down talk of Tottenham winning the title, suggesting that their form will drop off soon.
Spurs went five points clear at the top of the Premier League after earning a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Friday night, with a Joel Ward own goal and a Heung-min Son strike proving decisive.
It’s been a glorious start to the campaign for the north London side, with Ange Postecoglou bringing the feel-good factor both on and off the pitch with Tottenham arguably the most entertaining side in the top flight right now.
So far this term, Tottenham have looked every bit as strong as Manchester City and Arsenal who are bound to be leading the race for the title, but according to Neville, Spurs may well be overperforming right now.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “I don’t think they are [title contenders], honestly. I don’t think they are.
“I think that this is something that’ll settle down in the next few months but if for some reason the rest of the teams aren’t quite there and Tottenham obviously aren’t in other competitions.
“They’re not in Europe, not in the Carabao Cup, they have free weeks so if they can keep their players…”
Responding to a question about the January transfer window, Neville added: “The one thing I will add about January is that if they’re in contention in January and they’re up there then why wouldn’t they boost the squad slightly to have a go at it?
“If City aren’t quite there and Arsenal slip up, then why wouldn’t you have a little got?
“I don’t think Tottenham are a good enough squad or a good enough team to win the league, but what they’re doing at this moment in time is surpassing all expectations of where we thought they would be.
“He [Ange Postecoglou] is doing a great job for them.”
Heung-min Son was also asked about their title hopes, but delivered a coy response.
“I’m experienced, I’m 31 so I can’t say ‘we’re going to win the league now’, obviously not,” he said.
“We just want to stay underground and stay humble because it’s early in the season.
“We just want to go game by game, get three points in every game possible and then see what will happen at the end of the season. If we work hard, let’s see what’s going to happen.”
However when asked about their title hopes after the match, Postecoglou had a different take.
“Let them dream, that’s what being a football supporter is all about.
“It’s fair to say this lot have suffered a lot so I’m not going to dampen that.”
