According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, “The Vikings have had discussions with former (Tennessee) Titans QB Ryan Tannehill about a potential deal. Talks are ongoing and nothing is imminent as of right now.”
The Dolphins drafted Tannehill in the first round (No. 8 overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He finished his six-year Dolphins tenure with 20,434 passing yards and 123 touchdown passes, No. 3 in franchise history in both categories behind Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Bob Griese.
After showing moments of brilliance but ultimately failing to live up to his first-round pedigree, Tannehill was traded to the highest bidder. The Dolphins traded Tannehill and a 2019 sixth-round selection to the Titans in exchange for a 2020 fourth-round selection and a 2019 seventh-round selection.
The final sentence in this latest report, saying “nothing is imminent,” throws some cold water on this marriage coming together immediately, but the fit makes sense for both sides. The Vikings need a veteran quarterback to pair with J.J. McCarthy, but they don’t want a legitimate quarterback competition in camp. For Tannehill, signing on as McCarthy’s mentor would extend his time in the league. He would pay it forward to the next generation of quarterbacks while knowing he is one injury or slow start away from being QB1 in Minnesota.
