Ferdinand jokes he should have signed for Everton

Les Ferdinand revealed that he wished he played for Everton because he “always scored” when he played at Goodison Park.

Speaking on BBC Sounds’ Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast

(12 October), the former Tottenham and Newcastle striker shared his fondness of playing Everton for his goal-scoring record, after admitting Toffees fans would not thank him for it.

Per Transfermarkt, Ferdinand scored 16 goals in 21 league games, including a hat trick for Queens Park Rangers in the inaugural season of the Premier League.

Ferdinand said: “The supporters will not thank me for saying this but it was Goodison Park. I used to think I should have played for Everton because I always scored when I played there.”

Every time

Every club has one or two players that just always score against them. Ferdinand was certainly that for the Toffees for the better part of a decade.

Between 1992 and 2005, there were only four seasons where Ferdinand failed to score against Everton – a tough opponent. The Toffees would certainly have welcomed a player of his quality into their side, even if it meant he’d just stop scoring against them.

In fact, Ferdinand scored more goals against the Toffees than any other team, with Spurs a close second with 11.

Everton did secure a big win on the opening day of the 1996/97 Premier League season, beating Ferdinand’s Newcastle 2-0 thanks to Duncan Ferguson’s brace of assists for Gary Speed and David Unsworth, but that’s more or less where their luck ends.

The Goodison Park faithful were happy to see the back of Ferdinand, but he would have made a huge addition to the club.
