The Atlanta Braves, coming off a disappointing 2024 season that ended in the National League Wild Card round, are facing significant roster challenges. The departure of ace Max Fried to the New York Yankees in free agency has left a glaring hole in their rotation, and the Braves are exploring ways to replace his innings.
With Corbin Burnes recently signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cody Williams of FanSided has proposed a potential “risky” trade target for Atlanta: Jordan Montgomery. The left-handed pitcher is currently in a precarious position after a disastrous 2024 season in Arizona, where he posted a 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 25 starts.
Williams noted that Montgomery’s struggles, combined with the Diamondbacks’ acquisition of Burnes, leave little room for him in Arizona’s rotation. Montgomery exercised his $22.5 million player option this offseason, forcing the Diamondbacks to consider trading him. While his most recent performance was poor, Montgomery’s track record from 2021-2023 is far more promising, with a 3.48 ERA and a 120 ERA+ during that span.
Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick did not hold back in criticizing the signing of Montgomery, calling it a “horrible decision” and labeling it the team’s biggest mistake of the season. This public admission has made it clear that Arizona is eager to move on from Montgomery, even if it means retaining part of his salary to facilitate a trade.
For the Braves, Montgomery could represent a low-cost opportunity to bolster their rotation, especially with Fried’s departure. Atlanta’s need for a reliable starter aligns with the potential upside Montgomery offers, particularly if a change of scenery helps him rediscover his pre-2024 form. His experience and ability to eat innings could provide much-needed stability for the Braves’ pitching staff.
While the move carries inherent risk, Montgomery’s previous success suggests he could thrive under the right conditions. For a team like Atlanta, looking to rebound after an underwhelming season, such a gamble might be worth taking.
