Every word Ange Postecoglou said on Son, Maddison, Veliz, Donley, The Fonz, VAR and injury news

Manor Solomon unfortunately during training got a significant injury to his knee, he’ll miss some significant game time over the next few months. That’s disappointing because he was contributing for us already and growing into his role. With Ivan Perisic already down, it’s not ideal when you lose a player in that position. Brennan Johnson is close but he’s not quite 100% and with the international break we’re kind of hoping he’ll get that time during that to be available straight after. Everyone else from last week is OK. Sonny’s fine. He trained the last two days, no problem.

Do you have to wrap James Maddison in cotton wool?

No-one’s wrapped in cotton wool mate. There’s no cotton wool here. There’s only bad wire and uncomfortable uniforms, mate. They all work hard every day they just have different programmes. Madders has worked hard all week, he hasn’t missed a session.

With the VAR decision, the audio coming out out, now the dust has settled, what’s your view?

It’s a bit of a weird one. Usually when something major happens you get a sense of it during the game but I didn’t and I don’t think anyone really had a sense that something significant had happened. Maybe I’m just focussed on the game but I didn’t get that sense. After the game the ref mentioned to me there was a statement coming out but even then, the first questioning I got wasn’t about that. It was only when I got to the press conference and all you blokes were muttering among yourselves and not listening to me that I knew something important must be happening. And then you kind of realise what’s happened.

kind of realise what’s happened. Obviously a fairly significant even during a game of football. Look, whatever I say is gong to be seen through the prism that we were the beneficiaries of the mistake and we certainly were that.

The facts of it are that it was a legitimate goal Liverpool scored that wasn’t given. You kind of look at why it’s not given because that’s the first thing you question: obviously something has broken down. It became clear it wasn’t an integrity issue, it wasn’t a misappropriation of the law, it was an error in communication, a mistake, a mistake which cost Liverpool. I get that it’s an unusual one in that it’s never happened before.
