David, born in 1996, is the seventh of nine children in the Njoku family. His parents, originally from Nigeria, emigrated to the United States in 1987, seeking better opportunities for their children. Innocent Sr., a former airline owner in Nigeria, transitioned to international business ventures after the move, while Stella, who once managed a clothing store, joined her husband on his global travels.
A Family Rooted in Resilience
The Njokus instilled in their children the importance of perseverance, hard work, and maintaining strong cultural ties. Despite their relocation, the family frequently returns to Nigeria, ensuring a deep connection to their heritage. David, affectionately nicknamed “Chief,” credits much of his identity and values to his father, who holds a chieftaincy title in Nigeria.
“My dad is into oil, something with an oil business. They call him ‘Chief’ when he’s in Africa on business,” David shared in 2022. His parents’ determination and commitment to family values have profoundly influenced David’s approach to life and sports.
Overcoming Initial Resistance
Athletics run deep in the Njoku lineage, with the family often referred to as a “track-and-field family.” Yet, football was initially met with resistance. “Football they didn’t like. At all,” David admitted. Despite this, his passion for the game eventually won his parents over, proving that dedication can overcome even the strongest reservations.
David’s journey took him from excelling in track and field to becoming a standout tight end at the University of Miami. His towering 6’4”, 246-pound frame, combined with his athleticism, made him a force to be reckoned with. In 2017, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, where he has continued to thrive.

Off the field, David remains deeply connected to his roots. In 2022, he funded a borehole project in his Nigerian village, providing much-needed access to clean water. “This is just the start. I plan on doing much more for my home country,” he said, highlighting his commitment to making a difference.
