Toronto Blue Jays Issue a very crucial Statement on Passing of Rico Carty

The Toronto Blue Jays have expressed their sorrow following the passing of former player and MLB legend Rico Carty at the age of 85. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the team paid tribute to Carty’s contributions both on and off the field:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Blue Jay and 15-year MLB veteran Rico Carty. A member of the Caribbean Baseball and Latino Baseball Halls of Fame and a humanitarian in the Dominican Republic — Carty’s legacy and impact will be remembered forever. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

 

 

 

Carty, a lifetime .299 hitter, enjoyed a remarkable 15-year MLB career with teams such as the Milwaukee Braves, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, and Toronto Blue Jays. Known for his hitting prowess, he secured the 1970 National League batting title with a .366 average and led the league in on-base percentage at .454. That same year, he earned his lone All-Star appearance.

Joining the Blue Jays in the franchise’s early days, Carty played 104 games in 1978 and 132 in 1979, solidifying his place as one of the organization’s early stars. In 1978, at the age of 38, he showcased his power by hitting 20 home runs, with 11 for Oakland before being traded to Toronto. He followed that with 12 homers in 1979, further cementing his legacy.

Over his illustrious career, Carty amassed 204 home runs and 890 RBIs, with a standout season in 1978 where he tallied 99 RBIs. His 1970 campaign with Atlanta remains legendary, featuring 101 RBIs and a league-leading .366 average.

Off the field, Carty’s impact extended beyond baseball. As a humanitarian in his native Dominican Republic, he left a legacy that resonated deeply within his community and earned him induction into the Caribbean Baseball and Latino Baseball Halls of Fame.
