Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has officially been cleared of charges stemming from an October traffic stop involving a firearm, according to a statement released Monday by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. The investigation determined that the gun found under Williams’ seat during the stop belonged to his brother, who possesses a valid concealed pistol license.
Worthy clarified that charges would have been filed if the firearm had been in Williams’ possession but emphasized that the evidence confirmed it was not. “We have looked at this case thoroughly and objectively. We did not consider that Mr. Williams is a Detroit professional athlete in our decision-making,” Worthy stated, addressing speculation of preferential treatment.
The incident initially sparked an internal Detroit police investigation after media reports questioned the lack of immediate arrest and whether Williams’ prominence as an NFL player influenced the handling of the case. However, the prosecutor’s office emphasized that their decision was based purely on the facts, with Worthy personally affirming it was the correct course of action.
Williams, now in his third year with the Lions, has endured his share of off-field challenges, including a suspension earlier in the season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Despite these setbacks, he has contributed significantly to the Lions’ offense in 2024, recording 29 receptions for 602 yards and four touchdowns.
As the Lions eye a strong finish to their season, both the organization and Williams will be hoping to move past this legal matter and focus on maintaining momentum on the field.
