Former Denver Nuggets player Austin Rivers recently shared strong opinions about San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama’s playing style on his podcast, Off Guard. Rivers, who has been following the 7-foot-4 sensation’s rise, expressed frustration over Wembanyama’s preference for perimeter play, noting an increase in his three-point attempts this season. According to Rivers, Wembanyama’s skill and size should make him a dominant presence near the basket rather than primarily a three-point shooter.
“I don’t mind him shooting a three,” Rivers said, “but it drives me insane that he’s on the perimeter so much. This guy should be down there getting tip-ins—he could have seven a game.” Wembanyama has upped his three-point attempts from last year, averaging 7.1 attempts per game compared to 5.5 previously. However, his shooting efficiency has dropped, perhaps signaling that a shift to more paint-oriented play could boost his impact.
With most of his shots coming from outside three feet, Wembanyama’s approach contrasts with Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, who has found a balance between outside shooting and close-range scoring.
