Amid a challenging 3-6 season, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze is re-evaluating his quarterback strategy as the Tigers prepare for their final three games. While sixth-year senior Payton Thorne has shown improvement, Freeze is contemplating whether to continue with Thorne or give other quarterbacks an opportunity. This decision comes as Auburn’s passing game has struggled to find consistency, most recently in a lackluster performance against Vanderbilt, where the Tigers managed just seven points.
Thorne, a Michigan State transfer, had a shaky start this season, including a four-interception game against Cal. Although he regained his spot and has cut down turnovers, the offense hasn’t fully taken off. Freeze acknowledged the difficulty of deciding whether to stick with a player who hasn’t been a major issue but hasn’t sparked consistent success either.
Backup options include redshirt sophomore Holden Geriner, who has seen minimal action, and true freshman Walker White, one of the top QB recruits of 2024, who has yet to play. Freeze has been in close contact with White, discussing his development and leadership potential for Auburn’s future.
With Auburn’s offense ranked No. 114 nationally in points per drive, Freeze and his stamyff are using this bye week to weigh their options. The Tigers’ next test will be at home against Louisiana Monroe.
