Speaking at a recent fan forum, Ange Postecoglou and Heung-min Son were discussing how the captain’s armband found the South Korean, and how he feels about the added responsibility.
It seems everything has changed at Tottenham this summer. With a new manager, Ange Postecoglou, things were always likely to be different, but the transformation of the club has been immense, and very quick, too.
The style of play has been drastically altered, with the conservative approach of Antonio Conte stripped away. In its place is Postecoglou’s desire to play attacking, exciting football.
And it seems to be working, too. The Lilywhites are unbeaten in the league’s first five fixtures and it’s safe to say the fans are enjoying what they have seen.
In terms of personnel, Spurs have seen their star striker, Harry Kane leave the club for Bayern Munich. With the uncertain future of Hugo Lloris, it would likely have been down to the England captain to take the armband at Tottenham, but that responsibility fell to Heung-min Son instead.
Why did Ange Postecoglou pick Sonny as skipper?
At the fan forum, Son was asked about how he felt when he was told he would be the new Tottenham Hotspur captain, and said: “That day, in that meeting, it was the most nervous moment in my life, because I had to give a speech to the players. I looked back at the video and I was just clapping [while I spoke].
“But being captain of this huge club is such an honour and I will do my best to make sure the team is doing well. It was a big surprise, but a very special day for me… I’m just trying to be a good example.
“You have to bring all the experience you have. I have room to improve as a captain, but the players are making my job very easy.”
Postecoglou was then asked why he chose Son as his captain, and said: “It’s a massive responsibility. It was a big decision on my behalf, but a fairly easy one.
“I knew Sonny would be a great fit. Knowing how he feels about this club, and how his teammates feel about him, I knew it would be overwhelmingly positive when I told him.
“[I kept it a surprise] because I wanted him to experience it in that moment rather than me telling him [privately]. It was a moment he should share with the people who are important, the players. As I say, it was a really easy decision.”
