Newcastle United needed to stand up defensively against AC Milan, and they did just that.
However, it was not just the defenders and goalkeeper who helped Newcastle earn a point from their Champions League opener.
Nick Pope produced multiple saves to deny AC Milan, while Kieran Trippier used all of his experience to help the Magpies get over the line and avoid defeat.
But there were also impressive performances in midfield. Sean Longstaff really impressed on what was his Champions League debut, while Bruno Guimaraes looked at home as he returned to Europe’s grandest stage.
The 25-year-old really struggled to get on the ball at times, with AC Milan marking him out of the game. But eventually the Brazilian found a way to influence proceedings, and most of Newcastle’s good play in central areas came through him.
He was vital defensively too, and was able to get the team up the pitch when the pressure was on in the second half.
It was a good performance from Bruno, and one that delighted his manager Eddie Howe.

After the game, Howe spoke to TNT Sports Brazil, and was asked to discuss Bruno’s performance at the San Siro.
“He’s huge,” he said.
“I thought he played very well today. I thought he was interesting tactically. He was man marked as you said, so we had to really work had to create space.
“I thought defensively he was very, very good for us. Vital that he contributed to the defensive effort, especially in the middle of our midfield.
“And I think that from the start of the season he’s getting better and better. His experience with the national team is very good. So he’s come back in a very good place.”
Bruno getting back to his best for Newcastle
While he has been far from poor, Bruno has not been at his best at times this season. He endured a slow start, and even hit out at fans after criticism following the defeat to Manchester City.
But he has looked much better since the international break. He really impressed during the win over Brentford, while it was a different kind of performance on Tuesday night. But Bruno still had an impact, much to the delight of Howe.
It is great to see Bruno getting back to his best, and it is no surprise that it has coincided with Sean Longstaff returning to the starting XI. The local lad really helps get the best out of Bruno, and hopefully that continues on Sunday against Sheffield United.
