The Brisbane Broncos, who finished second in the 2023 season, faced a challenging start to 2024. The decision to kick off the year at the high-profile Las Vegas event seemed promising for the Broncos, a team known for their glamorous image. After narrowly missing the championship last season, expectations were high, and Vegas appeared to be an ideal launchpad for a successful year. However, in hindsight, some within the club believe that the extravagant trip may have exacerbated the egos of a squad already seen as the NRL’s “rock stars.” This inflated sense of self-importance, combined with mounting public and media pressure, created difficulties for both the players and head coach Kevin Walters.
Despite remaining in contention midway through the season, the Broncos’ performance deteriorated significantly. They lost ten of their last thirteen matches, leading to a disappointing exit from the finals race. Issues with discipline both on and off the field were apparent. Off the field, the players’ focus seemed to wane due to distractions like social media, social events, and fan adulation, which affected their on-field performance. On the field, while they displayed moments of brilliance with some impressive tries, they also struggled with fundamental aspects of the game, including set completions and handling errors. Reece Walsh, known for his standout performances, was even instructed by the coaching staff to ‘slow down’ to avoid impulsive mistakes.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Broncos will see significant changes in their coaching staff. Kevin Walters will be supported by new assistants Trent Barrett and Ben Te’o, who are stepping in to replace John Cartwright and Lee Briers. This shift in coaching personnel comes in response to the team’s disappointing collapse in 2023, and it is hoped that the new staff will help steer the Broncos back to their winning ways.
Among the key players, Patrick Carrigan emerged as a standout, leading the team in both run metres and tackles, and demonstrating significant leadership qualities. Unfortunately, he did not receive adequate support from his teammates. On the other hand, Selwyn Cobbo, who had a remarkable 2023 season with 20 tries, underperformed in 2024, managing only six tries in 19 games and appearing lackluster at times.
For the 2025 season, the Broncos will not be making any new signings but will lose Tristan Sailor to St Helens.
