The Seattle Seahawks are set to acquire outside linebacker Trevis Gipson from the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com, the Seahawks will trade a sixth-round pick to Jacksonville for Gipson. This draft pick is not conditional, meaning that the Jaguars will receive it regardless of Gipson’s performance during the season, as confirmed by ESPN’s Brady Henderson.
This move comes as the Seahawks face uncertainty with their top edge rusher, Uchenna Nwosu, who suffered a knee injury in Seattle’s final preseason game. With Nwosu’s status still unclear, Gipson is being brought in as a potential solution to bolster the edge-rushing group.
Trevis Gipson, a fifth-year player, is joining the Seahawks from the Jaguars, as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Gipson began his NFL career with the Chicago Bears, where he made 19 starts out of 40 total appearances. In the 2021 season, he achieved seven sacks despite playing just 49% of defensive snaps. His playing time increased in 2022, although his sack total dropped to three, he maintained his pressure numbers with 18 pressures, similar to his previous year’s performance. Gipson was cut by the Bears last summer.
He quickly signed with the Tennessee Titans, but his time there was limited, as he played only 15% of defensive snaps across eight games. He then joined the Jaguars on a free-agent deal, but before he could make his debut with Jacksonville, he was traded to Seattle. The Jaguars are now focusing on other edge rushers like Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, while Gipson will seek to secure a rotational role with the Seahawks.
Seattle had previously traded Darrell Taylor to the Bears, which left them with reduced depth behind their remaining edge rushers, Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe, and Derick Hall. Gipson’s experience as a starter could be valuable, especially if the Seahawks face further injuries on the edge.
The trade of Taylor freed up cap space for Seattle, making Gipson a more affordable option. Gipson’s contract with the Jaguars was worth $1.13 million, which matches his cap hit. Jacksonville had already paid a $43,000 signing bonus, but Seattle will cover the rest of his salary, including a $100,000 roster bonus. A strong performance from Gipson in Seattle could enhance his value for a possible extended stay with the Seahawks or a new contract with another team in the future.
