On Saturday night, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell and defensive coordinator Adam Fuller reviewed the Seminoles’ first fall scrimmage, held at Doak Campbell Stadium. Both coaches were generally positive but also pointed out areas needing improvement.
Norvell began by summarizing the intrasquad game, noting that the team ran approximately 120 plays. He praised the defensive unit, particularly the starting defense, which he felt had the upper hand. Norvell described the defense as “disruptive,” disrupting the offense’s flow and making it difficult for them to find rhythm.
Despite the defensive dominance, Norvell highlighted several offensive positives. He praised the quarterbacks for their composure and accuracy, noting their effective decision-making under pressure. A standout moment for Norvell was a lengthy offensive drive that Fuller confirmed spanned 19-20 plays and culminated in a touchdown by Sam Singleton. This drive featured several crucial third-down conversions and demonstrated the offense’s ability to wear down the defense in the muggy conditions.
Norvell also commended freshman receiver Elijah Moore, who, despite not enrolling early, made a notable impact during the scrimmage. Moore’s performance further solidified his promising start to fall camp.
Following Norvell’s remarks, Fuller shared his perspective on the scrimmage. While he acknowledged some good execution, he critiqued the team’s tackling, penalties, and pass-rushing efficiency. Fuller observed that the defensive line performed better against the run than the pass, offering a somewhat different view from Norvell’s positive appraisal of the defense.
Fuller also expressed confidence in the defense’s work ethic and effort, but stressed the need for more attention to detail and intensity. He emphasized that the team’s effort is strong, but improvements are necessary to enhance their overall performance.
