Martin Necas, a notable trade target for the Philadelphia Flyers, has renewed his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, extending his tenure with the Metropolitan Division rival through the 2025-26 season. Necas has signed a two-year deal worth $13 million, ensuring he remains in Raleigh for a few more years.
At 25, Necas has been frequently mentioned in NHL trade rumors throughout the offseason. His father had expressed dissatisfaction with Necas’ role on the Hurricanes, suggesting that he was eager to join a new team where he could play on the top line and the first power play unit. This dissatisfaction made Necas a logical candidate for the Flyers, who have struggled with their power play for the past three years and have lacked a top-tier right wing, aside from Travis Konecny and the newly acquired Matvei Michkov.
The Flyers’ right wing options have been limited, with Owen Tippett and rookie Tyson Foerster shifted to the left wing, Joel Farabee confined to lower-line roles, and Bobby Brink being inconsistent after his AHL stint. This situation would have provided Necas with substantial playing time and a prominent role if a trade had occurred.
Although it is uncertain how far negotiations with Necas progressed or if they even began, his new contract with the Hurricanes makes any potential trade a moot point. Necas had a breakout season in 2022-23, tallying 28 goals, 43 assists, and 71 points but saw a decline last season to 24 goals, 29 assists, and 53 points. However, he improved in the playoffs, registering nine points in 11 games after a less impressive performance the previous season.
