Taylan May was a prominent figure at Craven Park during Hull KR’s recent match against Catalans Dragons. The former Penrith Panthers standout observed from the stands as the Robins endured a defeat at the hands of the Dragons, having arrived in the UK earlier in the week.
May’s trip to the country was motivated by family matters, specifically to support his brother Tyrone, who currently serves as a halfback for Hull KR. Tyrone had recently been released from the Panthers following allegations of domestic violence, leading to his suspension by the NRL.
During his visit on Saturday, Taylan May integrated himself comfortably into the Hull KR environment. He engaged warmly with supporters, posing for photographs and immersing himself in the pre-game festivities provided by Craven Streat. Notably, he sported his brother’s Hull KR jersey from an earlier derby this season, observing Tyrone’s performance as the Robins battled to a golden point defeat.
Despite his visible presence in club colors, it has been clarified that Taylan May will not be joining the Hull KR squad. The team’s roster is currently at capacity in terms of quota spots, and there are no plans to recruit the 22-year-old, despite his recent participation in high-profile rugby league events such as the World Club Challenge earlier this year. However, there is speculation that May would consider a move to the Super League if an opportunity were to arise.
In recent days, Taylan May has been around the Hull KR playing group, although it has been affirmed that he does not have any formal affiliation with the club.
“Taylan is Tyrone’s brother, and he’s staying at Tyrone’s house, and they’re very close,” explained head coach Willie Peters. “He doesn’t have a club, so he’s wearing his brother’s jersey – in fact, I think it might be his; Tyrone bought it for him, and he wore it at a Penrith game, so he’s had it for a while. He’s here to support his brother; Tyrone is supporting him through a difficult time, and that’s the main focus.”
Taylan May has amassed significant experience in his rugby league career thus far, making 30 appearances in the NRL and scoring 17 tries. He was also a part of the Samoa squad that reached the World Cup Final in 2022. Earlier this year, May signed a new contract with Penrith reported to be valued at approximately £315,000 per season.
