Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks’ women’s basketball team came up one win short of a national championship this past season. They lost to coach Geno Auriemma, star Paige Bueckers and the UConn Huskies, 82-59.
It was a tough way to end an impressive season in which the Gamecocks went 35-4.
With the NCAA Tournament over and the offseason underway, Staley and the Gamecocks have been weathering the storm that is the NCAA transfer portal. On Monday, the bad news they learned last week became official.
Guard MiLaysia Fulwiley entered the transfer portal on Monday as promised with a do not contact tag. That tag signifies to schools that they should not reach out to Fulwiley until she contacts them first. This often indicates she already has a destination lined up.
Fulwiley just finished her sophomore season with South Carolina. She was a key role player for the Gamecocks during the 2024-25 season, playing in 39 games and averaging 18.9 minutes per contest.
She averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game to go along with shooting percentages of 42.6% overall and 25.8% from the 3-point line.
Hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, Fulwiley opted to stay home out of high school and had a successful freshman season with South Carolina, capped by a national title.
In her first college campaign, she averaged 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting 43.8% from the floor and 34.3% from the 3-point line.
For Staley and the Gamecocks, it’s a disappointing loss.
