Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 240 pounds, Smith is a force to be reckoned with on the field. He spoke confidently about his strengths and what he’s looking to bring to the Auburn Tigers.
“Causing havoc off the edge, that’s what I feel like is my specialty,” Smith declared. This is a sentiment he frequently discusses with Auburn’s defensive line coach, Vontrell King-Williams, emphasizing his ability to pressure quarterbacks at all levels. Smith’s senior season statistics at Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson High School proved his dominance on the field, recording 89 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks. His efforts were instrumental in securing the Alabama 7A state championship for his team.
Smith’s next steps, however, involve refining certain aspects of his game. One area he’s focusing on is improving his pad level, something he knows is crucial to his success in the SEC. “Just really staying low; pad level,” he explained. “Pad level is going to be key. Striking the man in front of me.”
As Smith transitions to Auburn, he’s aware of the elevated level of competition and preparation required in SEC football. He noted, “Going to Auburn and watching film, it’s going to be on a whole different level.”
In addition to his pass-rushing skills, Smith revealed another layer to his game: coverage abilities. “I can drop into coverage,” he said with a smile. “Because Thompson used me dropping into coverage. Disguising defenses. So yeah, I can drop into coverage.” This versatility gives Auburn even more flexibility in how they can utilize Smith on defense.
