Former Florida Gators standout safety Marcus Maye has been claimed by the Los Angeles Chargers after being waived by the Miami Dolphins earlier this week, according to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. This move marks a fresh start for the seasoned defender as he heads to the West Coast for the first time in his professional career.
A Return to Form?
Maye played 11 games for the Dolphins this season, starting three and recording 30 tackles (13 solo) along with one pass breakup. This is the most games he has appeared in since starting all 16 for the New York Jets during the 2020 season. Although his time in Miami was short-lived, it provided the Melbourne, Florida native with a chance to play professionally in his home state for the first time.
Maye originally signed with the Dolphins in June, but after being waived, the Chargers stepped in, potentially seeking his veteran presence to bolster their defensive depth.
From Gators Glory to NFL Experience
During his collegiate career with the Gators (2012–2016), Maye became a household name for Florida fans. He played under head coaches Will Muschamp and Jim McElwain, appearing in 41 games and amassing 210 tackles, five interceptions, and seven forced fumbles. His breakout season came in 2015, where he racked up two interceptions and five forced fumbles, earning Second-Team All-SEC honors in 2016.
Maye also endured the highs and lows of Gators football, toughing out the team’s difficult 4–8 season in 2013 before enjoying bowl appearances in 2015 and 2016. Unfortunately, his senior season ended prematurely due to a broken arm, sidelining him from the SEC Championship and the Outback Bowl.
NFL Journey
Drafted in the second round (39th overall) by the New York Jets in 2017, Maye spent five seasons with the franchise before joining the New Orleans Saints for two seasons. His time with the Jets showcased his durability and playmaking ability, highlighted by a standout 2020 season.
Now, as he joins the Chargers, Maye will aim to leverage his experience to make an impact on a team fighting to remain competitive in a loaded AFC West.
