Nagy, who initially joined the Chiefs under Andy Reid in 2013, had a four-year stint as Bears head coach, achieving two playoff appearances but facing challenges with an inconsistent quarterback roster. His time in Chicago is now seen in a more favorable light, especially considering his success with then-Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Nagy’s 34-31 record with the Bears and his AP Coach of the Year award in 2018 support his credentials, but his later seasons saw diminishing returns. Trubisky’s numbers notably dipped after Nagy’s departure, underscoring the impact Nagy may have had on his performance.
Back with the Chiefs since 2022, Nagy has proven instrumental in their success this season despite a challenging offensive lineup due to injuries, including key absences like Hollywood Brown and Isiah Pacheco. Kansas City’s current 8-0 record has been attributed in part to Nagy’s resilience and adaptability, with the Chiefs excelling in third-down conversions, lengthy drives, and time of possession. Head coach Andy Reid credits Nagy’s ability to coordinate under pressure and his knack for maximizing the performance of his available players.
As coaching agents and executives suggest, Nagy’s head-coaching experience paired with his tactical flexibility and leadership qualities could make him an attractive candidate. Given the NFL’s current trend of rehiring former head coaches, Nagy could find himself at the top of owners’ lists seeking a steady and experienced leader.
