NSW Rugby League’s quest to find a new State of Origin coach has taken a dramatic turn as NSWRL boss David Trodden dismissed the likelihood of Ivan Cleary or Craig Bellamy stepping into the role. Following Michael Maguire’s shock exit to join the Broncos, speculation had surged around the Panthers and Storm coaching legends as top contenders.
Trodden clarified on SEN Radio that while NRL coaches aren’t entirely excluded from consideration, the demands of the Origin role and NRL club commitments make it “highly unlikely.” Trodden cited Maguire’s singular focus on the Blues in 2023 as pivotal to his success, a level of dedication difficult for current NRL coaches to replicate.
Adding to the intrigue, Craig Bellamy, a seven-time Dally M Coach of the Year, had already ruled himself out, deeming the dual responsibilities of club and Origin coaching “too hard” on both the individual and their team.
As the pressure mounts to appoint a new coach, former Blues coach Laurie Daley and Roosters assistant Matt King have emerged as leading candidates. Trodden remained tight-lipped on specifics, revealing only that around a dozen names are under consideration, with a decision expected before year’s end.
NRL commentator Andrew Voss has urged swift action, emphasizing the importance of appointing a coach before the preseason to ensure proper preparation for the 2025 Origin series opener against Queensland.
