The NFL has imposed an eight-game suspension on Pittsburgh Steelers safety Cam Sutton for the upcoming 2024 season due to a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. This decision, announced on Monday, entails Sutton not receiving pay during the suspension period and being eligible to seek reinstatement starting October 29.
Sutton’s suspension relates to his alleged involvement in a domestic violence incident in Florida in March. Following the incident, Sutton surrendered to authorities and subsequently entered a pretrial diversion program in April, after the charges against him were reduced from a felony to misdemeanor battery. As part of his agreement with prosecutors, Sutton was required to undergo a mental health evaluation.
The NFL conducted its own investigation into the matter, leading to the decision to suspend Sutton for the initial eight games of the season.
Previously with the Detroit Lions, Sutton was released immediately after an arrest warrant was issued in connection to the incident. He later secured a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in June, signing a one-year deal. Despite participating in team activities and minicamps, Sutton refrained from discussing the specifics of his arrest or potential consequences from the NFL regarding the personal conduct policy.
Upon signing with the Steelers, Sutton acknowledged the challenges he faced, stating, “Adversity strikes everyone in life. So it’s all about how you handle it, how you necessarily go through those phases and just knowing who you are individually, not letting someone else dim your light.”
