Adding to their streak of success, freshman quarterback DJ Lagway capped off an impressive debut season by earning MVP honors in the Gasparilla Bowl. Lagway led the Gators to a commanding 33-8 victory over Tulane, while also celebrating the commitment of transfer portal wide receiver J. Michael Sturdivant. Pete Nakos of On3 Sports has predicted that wide receiver Johntay Cook, a former five-star recruit from Texas, will transfer to Florida. Cook, hailing from DeSoto, Texas, originally committed to the Texas Longhorns but saw limited playing time during his two seasons in Austin. Over 20 games, he recorded 16 receptions for 273 yards, numbers that didn’t quite meet his expectations as a highly-touted prospect. During a recent visit to Gainesville, Cook spent significant time with Lagway, and their connection appears to have been a major factor in Cook’s potential decision to transfer.
If the Gators successfully secure Cook’s commitment, he will join a loaded wide receiver room that already includes Dallas Wilson, J. Michael Sturdivant, and returning standout Trey Wilson. Together, this group could form one of the most dynamic receiver units in college football, giving Lagway an array of weapons to work with heading into the 2025 season.
This would mark a stark contrast to last year’s Christmas period for the Gators, which saw running back Trevor Etienne commit to rival Georgia, dampening the holiday spirit for Florida fans. In 2024, however, the program is poised to make a major splash, further building on its recent success.
