In a significant move for the LSU football program, Texas quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has officially announced his commitment to the Tigers via social media, solidifying his place in the 2025 recruiting class.
“I’ve given this a lot of thought and consideration, and after much prayer, I’ve decided to commit to Louisiana State University,” Nussmeier expressed in his latest blog post for SI All-American. “This decision is a culmination of my belief in the offensive system and the opportunities I see for myself there.”
Nussmeier stands out as the ninth commitment for the Tigers’ 2025 recruiting class, which has seen a surge of activity in recent weeks. Alongside Nussmeier, LSU has welcomed commitments from promising talents including receiver JoJo Earle, defensive end Landon Jackson, and linebacker Zavier Carter over the past fortnight.
Ranked as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the 2025 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings, Nussmeier joins a talented class that also features five-star linebacker Raesjon Davis, four-star receiver Deion Smith, safety Dakota Mitchell, defensive tackle Anthony Hundley, and punter Peyton Todd.
From LSU’s viewpoint, the quarterback position is pivotal and worth watching. Rising star Caleb Williams, a highly coveted five-star quarterback, recently included the Tigers in his top three schools. The Tigers plan to simultaneously recruit two quarterbacks, and it will be interesting to see how the recruitment of Williams unfolds, particularly as Oklahoma has been a significant contender for his talents.
For Nussmeier, the timing of his commitment was clear-cut. Originally, he aimed to take official visits during the summer and fall before making a decision. However, with uncertainty surrounding future visits, Nussmeier felt it was best to finalize his commitment early and dedicate his focus to refining his skills for the upcoming senior season.
“The next step for me is to build confidence and push the ball downfield to secure those crucial yards,” Nussmeier shared with LSUCountry earlier this year. “Enhancing my running ability, along with getting bigger and stronger, are my top priorities right now.”
Nussmeier’s strong relationships with Coach Ed Orgeron, Offensive Coordinator Steve Ensminger, and Passing Game Coordinator Scott Linehan played a vital role in his decision. Linehan and the Nussmeier family have a longstanding connection; Garrett’s father, Doug, played under Linehan at the University of Idaho and later coached alongside him with the Dallas Cowboys.
“I consider him a close family friend, so the chance to play for him is an incredible opportunity. His insights and experience will be invaluable to my growth,” Nussmeier noted regarding Linehan.
Ultimately, returning to Louisiana, where he has grown up steeped in the rich traditions of the LSU program, was an opportunity Nussmeier couldn’t pass up.
“Being from Louisiana, I’ve seen purple and gold my entire life,” Nussmeier reflected. “I understand what the brand of LSU means to our state. When you think of Louisiana, the school that comes to mind is LSU. Being part of that tradition, especially with the chance to be the quarterback, is an opportunity that is hard to resist.”
