In a landmark move, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is set to join the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2028, backed by a $600 million investment from the Australian government over 10 years. PNG’s Foreign Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, emphasized that the historic expansion is focused solely on strengthening ties with Australia and fostering rugby league in PNG, dismissing any connection to countering China’s influence in the Pacific.
The funding package will support the establishment of a PNG-based team, including facilities such as a high-performance center and a secure accommodation village, with PNG allocating an additional 400 million kina ($150 million) for infrastructure development. Players signed to the franchise will also benefit from tax exemptions under newly proposed laws.
Tkatchenko underlined that while Australia’s concerns over China’s growing influence in the region are acknowledged, the NRL deal centers on the shared cultural passion for rugby league and the long-standing relationship between the two nations. The Australian government shares this view, highlighting the strategic and cultural significance of sports diplomacy in the Pacific.
As PNG prepares to become the NRL’s 19th team, the league also plans to welcome the Perth-based Western Bears in 2027, contingent on a funding agreement with the Western Australia government.
