Robinson Chirinos, a former Texas Rangers catcher, has been named the Baltimore Orioles’ bench coach at 40 years old, just two years after retiring from his MLB career. This marks his first coaching role in professional baseball.
Chirinos, who wrapped up his playing days with the Orioles in 2022 as Adley Rutschman’s backup, played in 67 games that season. He replaces Fredi Gonzalez, who served as the Orioles’ bench coach for three years.
With a career spanning 11 seasons, Chirinos had notable stints with the Rangers, where he recorded 67 home runs and 199 RBIs. Now stepping into a pivotal coaching role, he may be on the path to future managerial opportunities.
The bench coach role is often a springboard to managerial positions, as it involves assisting the manager in strategizing and game planning. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, entering his seventh season, will now rely on Chirinos’ insights and experience.
Chirinos’ journey to this point is unique. Born in Venezuela, he started his career as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs in 2000. After a decade in their system, he made his MLB debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011. He later joined the Rangers via trade in 2013, where he became a key contributor, particularly from 2017-2019, during which he hit 52 home runs and drove in 161 RBIs.
His playing career also included time with the Houston Astros, where he appeared in the 2019 World Series. Known for his leadership and knowledge of the game, Chirinos is expected to bring those qualities to his new role with the Orioles.
As the Orioles continue to build on recent successes, Chirinos’ familiarity with the game, coupled with his ability to connect with players, could prove invaluable. For now, all eyes will be on how he transitions from player to coach and the impact he has on the team’s continued development.
