The Atlanta Braves are reportedly exploring a major trade opportunity to bolster their lineup, as the Chicago Cubs have made former NL MVP Cody Bellinger available, according to Ken Rosenthal. This potential acquisition could pair Bellinger with Ronald Acuña Jr., forming a formidable offensive duo.
A Second Chance at Bellinger
The Braves previously pursued Bellinger during the July trade deadline but fell short. Now, with Bellinger on the market again, Atlanta may have a renewed chance to bring the versatile outfielder/first baseman into the fold. His contract, however, could prove to be a sticking point, with $27.5 million owed in 2025 and a $25 million player option for 2026.
The Good, the Not-So-Good, and the Potential
If Bellinger replicates his stellar 2023 season, where he slashed .307/.356/.525 with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs, the price tag may be well worth it. However, his 2024 performance—.266/.325/.426 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs—could raise concerns about his consistency.
To offset the financial load, the Braves could negotiate a deal involving fewer prospects if they agree to take on Bellinger’s full salary. Alternatively, Atlanta could push for the Cubs to retain some salary in exchange for more highly ranked prospects. Either way, the deal is likely to include at least one top-30 prospect.

With Ronald Acuña Jr. sidelined for Opening Day, Bellinger could fill an immediate need in right field, where he has logged 182 career games. Long-term, he could help address Atlanta’s lack of stability in left field, a position where the Braves have struggled to find a consistent performer.
While options like Jarred Kelenic and Ramon Laureano have yet to prove reliable, Bellinger’s recent track record makes him a safer bet. If Laureano is non-tendered—clearing his projected $6.37 million salary—it could further ease the Braves’ financial path to acquiring Bellinger.
Bellinger’s Atlanta Track Record
A key incentive for the Braves is Bellinger’s past success at Truist Park. In 22 games, he has slashed .287/.347/.448 with four home runs and nine RBIs. Projected over a full season of home games, those numbers would rival some of Atlanta’s top hitters, including Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson.
