Ivan’s surprising insight about Nathan Cleary sparks an intriguing theory involving Mary Fowler

Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has opened up about his son Nathan’s happiness amidst rumors that the star halfback delayed shoulder surgery to spend more time with Matildas star Mary Fowler. Speaking on Triple M radio, Ivan addressed claims that Nathan’s surgery—now placing him in a race to recover for the Panthers’ season opener in March—could have been done sooner.

While Ivan reiterated that their preferred surgeon wasn’t immediately available, he also admitted to having a “heart-to-heart” with Nathan about the situation, noting, “I’ve never seen him so happy, and that’s important as well.”

The younger Cleary’s European getaway with Fowler has sparked speculation about the long-term future of their relationship, with some even wondering if Nathan might consider a move to the English Super League to be closer to Fowler, who spends most of her time in England playing for Manchester City.

Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher also stirred controversy when he suggested Fowler might relocate to Australia instead, remarks criticized for underestimating her stature in women’s soccer. Fletcher later clarified his comments, stating the focus remains on keeping Nathan and Ivan Cleary with the Panthers for as long as possible.

Will Nathan Cleary’s happiness influence his career decisions, or will the Panthers find a way to keep their star halfback firmly in Penrith? Stay tuned.
