After Georgia’s impressive 31-17 win over Tennessee, head coach Kirby Smart made his frustrations known regarding the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings. Despite Georgia’s strong performance, the Bulldogs entered the game ranked No. 12, which would have kept them out of the 12-team playoff field under the current expanded format.
Smart voiced his discontent with the CFP committee, questioning their criteria for ranking teams. “I really don’t know what they look for anymore,” Smart remarked. “I would welcome anybody in that committee to come down to this league and play in this environment. It’s a tough place to play.”
Smart also took the opportunity to endorse Tennessee, noting that while the Volunteers fell to 8-2, they still had a chance at making the playoff. He further emphasized the unique challenges of the SEC, arguing that the committee might not fully understand the toughness of the league.
His comments underscore the difficulty the committee will face with the expanded playoff, as decisions will grow more complex, especially when it comes to ranking teams from power conferences like the SEC.
