The New Orleans Saints are mourning the loss of Dr. Ken Saer, their first team physician and orthopedist, who passed away on November 10, 2024, at the age of 94.¹ Dr. Saer was an integral part of the Saints organization, joining the team in 1967 and serving for 24 years. His legacy extends beyond his impressive tenure, as he played a crucial role in shaping the team’s medical department and ensuring the health and well-being of its players.
Dr. Saer’s contributions to the Saints and the medical community are immense. He was a pioneer in the field of sports medicine, and his work helped establish the standard for team medical care in the NFL. As a respected orthopedist, Dr. Saer was part of the original group that formed the AFL-NFL Professional Football Trainers and Physicians Association, now known as the National Football League Physicians Society (NFLPS). This organization leverages new technologies and advocates for rule changes to improve player safety and response to on-field injuries.
The Saints organization is paying tribute to Dr. Saer’s remarkable service and dedication. Dr. Saer’s academic and professional background is equally impressive. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane University, where he also taught. As a member of the Southern Orthopedic Specialists, Dr. Saer provided top-notch care to citizens of New Orleans and the Gulf South region.
The funeral services for Dr. Saer will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Church, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. and Mass at noon. He is survived by his wife, Meredith, two sons, Robert and John, three daughters, Shaun, Margaret, and Penny, two stepsons, Robert and Mitchum, one stepdaughter, Melanie, and 14 grandchildren.
As the Saints move forward, they will undoubtedly carry Dr. Saer’s legacy with them. His influence on the team’s medical department and his commitment to player care have left an indelible mark on the organization. The NFL community will deeply miss Dr. Saer’s expertise and dedication to the sport.
