After picking up his player option for next season, Sydney Roosters hooker Brandon Smith has addressed rumors suggesting he may leave the club before his contract ends in 2025. Smith, who joined the Roosters in 2023 after six years with Melbourne Storm, has faced challenges living up to expectations and achieving consistency at his new club.
Currently sidelined with an ACL injury, Smith will miss the first half of next season, and rejoining the starting lineup could be difficult due to the strong performances of Connor Watson and Victor Radley. Although he’s on a significant contract worth around $850,000 per season, speculation emerged that the Roosters might look to offload him to pursue high-profile recruits in upcoming seasons.
Despite these rumors, Smith affirmed his desire to stay with the Roosters, explaining on James Graham’s The Bye Round podcast that he hasn’t yet discussed his future with coach Trent Robinson, who’s been away. Smith expressed his commitment to remaining with the Roosters, emphasizing that both he and his partner are well-connected to the club. However, he acknowledged that decisions in rugby league don’t always align with personal preferences.
The Daily Telegraph reports that some clubs are aware of Smith’s potential availability and have indicated interest if the Roosters decide to let him go. Smith mentioned that while his manager suggested exploring other clubs, he’s in no hurry to make a move. He said he wants to focus on his recovery and get back to training before considering other options.
Smith could attract considerable interest if he hits the open market, especially following the news that front-rower Terrell May has been permitted to leave the Roosters despite recently re-signing. May, who had an impressive 2024 season, was re-signed earlier this year but is now reportedly free to explore other options. Clubs like the Canterbury Bulldogs, St George Illawarra Dragons, and Wests Tigers are expected to be top contenders for his services, with the May brothers previously expressing a desire to play on the same team.
