Brisbane Broncos forward Kobe Hetherington is scheduled to meet with new coach Michael Maguire for critical talks regarding his future with the team.
Despite being under contract with the Broncos until the end of the 2025 NRL season, Hetherington has been linked to a potential exit for several months. He was even given permission to engage with other teams prior to November 1.
As the Broncos aim for a strong return to the finals next year, major roster changes are expected, especially with Maguire now at the helm after taking over from Kevin Walters. The Broncos are looking to replicate the success of the 2023 season, which saw them make the NRL Grand Final.
Hetherington, who is also linked to a move to the Wests Tigers, will meet with Maguire this week to discuss whether his role at the Broncos is secure for next season.
“We’re going to meet with Michael Maguire next week to see where we are at,” Hetherington’s agent, Chris Haddad, told The Courier-Mail last week. “It’s 50-50 right now. There’s a chance of staying, but we’re also considering leaving depending on how the meeting goes.”
The 25-year-old, son of former QLD Maroons and Kangaroos player Jason Hetherington, has made 77 appearances for the Broncos since debuting in 2021, with 22 of those matches played this season. A versatile forward, Hetherington is typically used off the bench but is capable of playing longer minutes when required.
This season, he has racked up 1,483 running metres, averaging 67 per game, along with 527 tackles at a 94.4% efficiency, 25 tackle busts, and a try scored against the Gold Coast Titans in Round 22.
Haddad confirmed that Hetherington has garnered interest from several clubs, including the Tigers. “He loves the Broncos and ideally wants to stay,” he said. “But like any player, Kobe wants a regular starting spot, which is tough with Pat Carrigan playing at lock.”
The Broncos have allowed Hetherington and his team to explore options with other clubs, but unless the Broncos grant permission for him to leave, no formal offers can be made.
