The Texas Longhorns and Notre Dame Fighting Irish are reportedly in discussions for a home-and-home football series set to start in 2028. If finalized, this series would bring two of college football’s historic programs head-to-head once again, adding another high-profile matchup to Texas’s non-conference schedule as it transitions to the SEC. Currently, Texas is scheduled to face Ohio State over the next two seasons, followed by a return trip from Michigan.
According to Chip Brown of Horns247, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte is spearheading negotiations with Notre Dame, aiming to rekindle the teams’ rivalry. Notably, both Texas and Notre Dame hold a significant place in college football history, tied for the fourth-most wins all-time. The teams last clashed in a 2016 and 2017 home-and-home series, with Notre Dame dominating in South Bend and Texas earning a dramatic double-overtime win in Austin.
In addition to possible matchups with Notre Dame, Texas’s future schedules include games with Louisiana Tech, UTSA, and Arizona State. A revived series with Notre Dame would give Texas fans another opportunity to witness a clash of “blue blood” programs as the Longhorns continue building a challenging non-conference lineup in preparation for life in the SEC.
