A portion of Bears fans who solely blamed offensive coordinator Luke Getsy for the team’s struggling passing attack were proven incorrect following his firing. Getsy’s popularity across the league became evident as he received interview requests for offensive coordinator positions from the Patriots, Saints, and ultimately landed the role as play-caller for the Raiders. This suggests that teams recognized quarterback Justin Fields as a contributing factor, if not the main reason, for the Bears’ league-low passing yards between 2022 and 2023. This differs from the narrative advocated by Fields supporters who argue for keeping him instead of selecting Caleb Williams from USC as the first overall draft pick.
Although Getsy is not absolved of blame, he now has a second chance, and it is up to him to make the most of it. Following his introduction as the Raiders’ new coordinator, Getsy praised Fields, highlighting the tremendous growth he witnessed during their time together. However, it is worth noting that Fields ranked low in passer rating, passing yards, and completion percentage among quarterbacks who attempted at least 100 passes last year.
The question remains: where will Getsy end up? The Raiders are in need of a quarterback, and while Getsy’s positive remarks about Fields are noted, it is unclear if the Raiders would be willing to pair them again without guarantees of improved results.
Getsy mentioned that he does not have a specific skill set in mind for his next quarterback but emphasized the importance of escapability in the modern game, citing examples such as Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs and Brock Purdy of the 49ers.
Now comes the challenging part for Getsy. With the Raiders drafting 13th, history shows that only four quarterbacks chosen after the 13th overall pick since 2000 have made a Pro Bowl. Getsy is now tasked with studying college quarterbacks and reflecting on his time in Chicago, facing questions about his experiences during job interviews.
He acknowledged the need for growth and improvement, regardless of the level of success achieved, and expressed his competitive spirit and readiness to dive back into his role.
