Texas Longhorns Veteran Facing Suspension After Targeting Penalty
Texas Longhorns defensive lineman Vernon Broughton is set to miss the first half of the team’s next game following a targeting penalty in their narrow 27-24 win over Vanderbilt. Broughton was ejected late in the game after hitting Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia high and late, nullifying a potential game-sealing 72-yard interception return for a touchdown by Kobe Black. Vanderbilt used the penalty to score a touchdown five plays later, closing the gap to three points.
Broughton, who has posted 16 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery this season, could be a key absence for the Longhorns. Texas may appeal the decision, but if upheld, Broughton will miss the first half of their upcoming game against Florida. The Gators, led by quarterback DJ Lagway, will likely look to exploit Broughton’s absence, particularly in the run game.
